Farm data is fragmented. Here’s how to unlock credit for smallholders

Agriculture is central to Uganda’s development agenda, and digital tools for farmers have multiplied. Many AgriTech platforms still work in isolation, though. Each collects its own farmer, production and transaction data in its own format, so the data ends up fragmented and hard to trust.

Why it matters for finance

Financial service providers need consistent, reliable data to assess risk. Without it, smallholder farmers look too risky to lend to, even when their records would say otherwise.

A data commons, not another app

UNCDF’s work with the Uganda Bankers’ Association found that an aggregated agricultural database is feasible, and that both lenders and AgriTech firms are willing to share data through APIs. The missing piece is neutral, standards-based plumbing:

  • A common data model for farmer and production data
  • Consent-driven APIs with clear rules for who sees what
  • Governance that platforms and lenders both trust

What we’re doing about it

The Awesome X-Lab is prototyping this data layer and plans to validate it through a community pilot before commercial rollout. If you run an AgriTech platform, a SACCO or a lending programme, we would like to hear from you.
